Need Villiers mk1 ignition

Post by winter »

The ignition on my 102 is really dead.
Isnthere anyone who has one and wants to delier it to me?
I just have the backplate and need therefor coil and breakerset incl. the connection from coil to spark.
Or can it be replaced by another ignition, because someone offers used parts incl ignition of a Silver Century (WSPCL)and a Century 100 (LLS).

Hello Evert, the villiers coil is the main weakness on older seagulls. The wipac ignition will fit, but you must fit the baseplate and flywheel. It would probably be a good idea to fit a new HT lead at the same time.

What do you mean with a " new HT lead" . What is that?
Sorry, my technical English is not very good.

The HT lead is the cable with the cap that fits on the spark plug and the other fitting that goes into the base plate of the ignition.

Check the for sale threads there are a couple in there for 15 pounds.

One thing before you start spending money, make sure you can get the old coil and breaker box off of the plate and the cheeks off the coil.

Stelios has a recent thread on rebuilding a mkI magneto plate using the currently available aftermarket coils.

IMHO a mkI magneto all rebuild and to spec is pure gold, just think how many seagulls are out there with everything else tickety-booh and only wanting spark.

For the screws David mentioned at first remove the points set, then apply some serious heat to the screws and to the ears. To remove the studs, screw on two nuts to the first one. Tight the nuts the one to the other, then grab both and try to undo them. That would undo the stud. Then you can remove the nuts and go to the second stud. If you see not coming out heat them a lot an then put water in the holes of the ears. This thermal sock usual break salts and rust. The point is not to use that many force that would destroy screw heads, studs etc. Heat is your friend.

That's my thread. viewtopic.php?f=2&t=4172&start=30

Maybe I am lucky.
Found a classic motorcycle shop 5 km from here who happens to have a coil, condensor and other stuff of villiers.
I take my complete assembly to him to see what he has or can do.
Coil costs EUR 20,-, sounds reasonable.

I did not have time yet to visit him but he has the correct coil (42 and 50 mm)for Eur 20,-, condensor and
Breakerpoints.
He can order the coil. Rest probably his stock. Don't know how much.

See the images enclosed he sent me.

This one is exactly like the one I used. Shorter than the original. The total length of the original is 87.5mm.

The guy fills the length with rings if required. But my coil is 63 mm and he could deliver it.
It appeared that the circuit in the ignition had a fault. We built up breakerparts again and what a miracle. We have spark and the engine runs again.

Nice! Enjoy it!
Only the points needed adjustment or did you change a part?

The points appeared to have a closed circuit so they did not break.
After rebuilding it and trying to have spark I felt a very strong spark through my body and saw a spectacular blue spark.
So it feeled and looked good.
Then 2 pulls and the girl was running.
It is an AC type.
