London 1927 in colour - wildly off topic!

Post by charlesp »

Sorry this is so far off topic, but you may think it's worth a look. Color film of London in 1927.

Very interesting though.

Most would be AEC's. Leyland did buy back and refurbish ww1 lorries after the war but most of those were single deck. We never did that well selling buses to London.
-- I had 25 years in the drawing office at Leyland and did much of my time on PSU's (Leopards) for Australia.

This was taken when I was young, the local shops and beaches feature in it. they were promotional films to make people want to come here.
There are double decker buses from the UK as well: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vR1CU8Nj ... r_embedded

Great film. My mum was 7 years old and lived in London in 1927. She lived near Petticoat Lane. Born in hearing of Bow Bells which makes her cockney. Does that make me a cockney or half of one? They say that the Oz accent is derived from cockney. Now how to put film on disc so I can show her?? She would be stoked. Thanks CharlesP.

"I had 25 years in the drawing office at Leyland and did much of my time on PSU's (Leopards) for Australia."

Leo-Pards, takes me back as yes, western aus had them when I was so young. I have a Leo-Pard badge from one. Work of art in itself. I will find it and post a pic.

They had The first rear door.....You could sneak in the back and not pay sometimes. The driver used to actually get out and place prams on the back "Holders" for ladies back then.

The "Holders"were actually that when a pushbike needed a tow. With a surfboard under one arm to and from Scarborough Beach Road to West Coast Highway. Otherwise it was 5 cents and the surf board was allowed in the bus.

We could even take gidgies and spearguns in the bus as well.

Correct me here, the front hubs had the logo on them? I seem to have that in my brain? Red and white? SO long ago aye?

The front hubs were called wheel nut covers and did have the leyland lettering . Top picture is a Leyland Panther PSUR1/2R - (P) Pasenger (S) Single Deck (U) Underslung Engine (R)
at rear The other R indicated RH drive. 2 indicates wheelbase (16'3")
They used to do a Leyland calendar called "The Lady Prefers" - A Leopard - A Tiger - A Panther. and the classis Dec " The Lady prefers a Titan" . and no-one in publishing dept spotted it.

Those are cool pictures, I have always wanted a bus.

This may be a little sad, but when you go to a rally you can take all your mates, beer, food, tents.

But you save the sleeping in the bus for yourself.

There was a big bus rally just down the road from me at Wisley aerodrome, but I have not seen it in the last couple of years.

There were some sad people there http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FTOR6dQxjEQ

They even brought buses over from Jersey for the event, but I did get to ride on RouteMaster 001 8) .

It makes British Seagull fanatics look very normal, the worst I saw at the bus rally, other than the blokes with books taking down numbers, was a guy in a kilt wearing a pith helmet closely followed by his large white pet goose, very strange  .

I did get to drive most of the models but just round the Leyland test track. Bit strange being 10 ft forward of the front wheels with another 50 ft of bus behind you.
