Tip for Cleaning Petrol Tanks

Post by longbowman »

I thought it would be useful to post my experience of cleaning the inside of a brass seagull tank. I bought an old one from John but it has the usual thick guey deposits inside. Stop up the outlet with a cork or rubber bung. I then filled the tank to almost full with hot water and then added a table spoon of caustic soda crystals (Wear safety specs!). I then topped up with some more water taking care not to let it spill over onto the paint. I left it for two days and then very carefully and quicly poured the liquid away down the sink and rinsed the tank outside and in with cold water. You have to rinse the outside quickly or the paint will come off. You can repeat this treatment again if all the guey gunk has not gone. It should leave the inside spotless.
