Piston ring end clearance
Wondering if any one knows what the piston ring end clearance should be on a silver century. I just put a brand new ring in the bore to check, & it has no dicernable gap? Have searched both sites & couldnt find an answer.

Re: Piston ring end clearance
In a cleaned up (Honed/deglazed) bore 0.0025 - 0.003"
Enjoy

Re: Piston ring end clearance
You are very welcome.
Stick to advised and you and your Gull will run smooth!
Others may well have another idea .................trust!
When you have done two tanks of fuel, let us know what the comp is?
1st tank 10:1 then second whatever you want within say 16:1. Then whatever carb setup re mixture you want to use for long time use.
Betya comp right up there with the best and bouncy compression when spun by hand.
Cheers

Re: Piston ring end clearance
Pics on how to measure piston ring gap, use a piston to set the ring in the bore square & measure with feeler gauge. This is a new ring & there is no clearance. If I was to use it it would need carefully filing to get clearance.
Re: Piston ring end clearance
Next pics removed old ring from piston & checked clearance & was well in spec so will refit to piston, Check ring groove is clean before refitting. Check bore is OK. Make sure ring ends line up with locating peg. This barrel has a Champher in the start & is easy to ease piston & rings into bore after lubricating piston & rings & bore with oil.
Re: Piston ring end clearance
Another option is make your own piston ring compessor out of an old tin can. When cut with tin snips there will be a sharp edge turned up make sure this is facing out so it doesnt catch the rings. Makesure the ring ends are in there locating groove, lube with oil & wrap ring compressor around & hold with grips. Piston is now easy to slide into the bore.
