11 ft Sunshine Yacht Tender
After studied the amount of work to restore my old boat, I decided to buy the brand new boat.
She is the Sunshine, a 11 ft Yacht Tender, designed by Walter J. Simmons.
The design is based on a 1915 Yacht Tender.
She has been build by the Dutch Bootbouwschool at Uitgeest, Holland.
She is 5 years old and hasn't seen any water yet.
As I like the coulor of wood I decided to sand of the primer at the outside of the hull.

Please enjoy and feel free to leave comments.
I think she will be a very good match with my Seagull SD.

That's very nice DD, is it glued lap plywood or regular timber construction? Will you sail it as well?

Hello Phil,
She is glued lap red ceder with a flexible compound.
Oak ribs, keel and a mahogany stern.
I will sail her in the future.
But first I wil have some fun rowing and testing my outboards.
I have 3 Seagulls, a Berini bootmaster, a Penta, a Britannia twin, an Automive power(JAP engined Seebee lookalike) and a Zundapp.
So plenty of engines to have fun with.
The boat needs to be finnishes with floor boards twarts and twartrisers.
I like to copy some details from my old boat.

A truly beautiful craft. Red cedar has a stunning grain are you going to varnish the outside?
You are right with your SD on the stern this will be an eye catcher.
All the best Graham

Thanks Graham,
I will varish the outside of the hull.
To varish the inside would be to much work to remove the primer between the ribs.
If you have a tip to remove the primer easily, please let me know.
Do you have an idea to mark the waterline?
I will keep you updated.

Yes I have to agree that stripping the inside of the hull would be a lot of work. As for the water line when you have two or three coats of varnish on. Drop the boat in the water with the load you expect to have on board drop three to four drops of oil based paint ( white shows up well) on the surface of the water. Providing the waters not to choppy you should have a faint wash line to follow. Don’t forget to drop some news paper on the remaining paint to remove it from the surface. I don’t want the environmentalists giving me grief for this suggestion.
What type of varnish will you use? You do have a better range of quality finishes available on the continent. Trust me take your time, avoid two pack auto motive finishes as these often give off cyanide gas as well as other nasty stuff. Take care when rubbing down don’t forget a good dust mask as cedar dust taste like you have been chewing old socks (not that I know what old socks taste like ). Grab an old pair of the wife’s old tights or stockings! After rubbing down to check all areas are smooth gently rub the tights over the surface if it snags you have missed a bit. Light rub with a tack rag after each rub down. After ten coats your craft will be perfectly sealed and good for two to three years use before it will need another coat.

Some new pictures of the progress.
She needs the floor boards, the front seat and a coat of paint inside and under the waterline.

DD, Did the boat building school actually build you a copy of your tender based on the original?

Hello FC,
normally a group of students built one ore more boats.
Just one of the students can obtain the result for the costs price.
This one was build as an eye catcher for a shop.
The owner has never finished the boat and gave it back to the school.
With the funds for this boat, the school bought wood for another project.
