"Winding up the elastic"

Post by arizmanor »

I have owned a Seagull 40+ for may years. Unfortunately, I have not used it for maybe more than thirty years. The last times it was run was in a barrel in fresh water. Otherwise during that time it has been stored upright on a stand. The time has now arrived to "wind up the elastic" and get it going again.

The query I have is it possible to utilise the gearbox oil - Duckhams Hypoid 140 and Super Outboard and Two Stroke Oil from Leisure Lines - both of the same age.

Thanks for any help,
Marcus

Dip your finger in. If it is still slippery it will work.

I doubt if the gear oil will have deteriorated. If it is still clear and bright and has not darkened in colour excessively use it. I'm still using some I got over 30 years ago.

Having had trouble with some two stroke oil I would be very cautious about that.

I had some go all "gloopy" after not many years on the shelf. It would not mix with the petrol and it would not pass through funnel with a filter gauze.

If in doubt ditch it!
