century bevel pinion removal

Post by Jerry In Maine »

pulled apart the lower on a century. have everything out except for the bevel pinion - but can't quite figure how it comes out. looks like it might need to be tapped upward with a brass drift but didn't want to muck up anything.

any advice?

Service Sheet No 1 says:

It should only be removed if essential and then with great care.

It can be tapped out complete with the bearing etc using a brass drift against the bevel pinion.

If necessary heat can be applied to the gearbox housing.

Use a tube or hollow drift to drive it back into position. Do not hammer the end of the pinion shaft

Great care must be taken to ensure that the hole in the bearing its correctly lined up so that the end cap screw can locate it as well as securing the end cap
