Leaks when tilted

Post by Century »

My century longshaft in most regards is in good shape, but it leaks gear oil when I leave the engine tilted up using the strut in either of the two positions. The leakage occurs through the water intake slots. Is this normal? If not normal, is there anything remedial I can do about it? I am very careful to fill the gear assembly with 140 SAE so that any excess drains out of the filler hole when the engine is held upright. I believe that is proper procedure. I carry the engine (as auxilliary to my main motor) near horizontally on a side mount built inside the boat and recently had a real mess result from the leakage. Thanks

Yep!

They leak like that.

Maybe let the "Leakage Out" untill it stops. Check level afterwards and keep it at that as you use it.

Any lubrication down there is good, even if seems below what it should be.

Are you definately sure it's gearbox oil? I used to think my silver century plus was leaking gearoil as it used to drip on the floor of the garage after use and it looked like used milky gearoil. It turned out to be congealed unburnt 2 stroke oil as after much searching (and questions on here) found it was coming from the bottom of the exhaust. I was using 2 stroke oil that I run my sthill saw on but since converting it to 25-1 and using marine grade oil its virtually stopped.
