Gearbox oil

Post by cahillp3 »

Hey Guys,
Im trying to source some 140 gearbox oil. Im living in Aberdeen at the moment and found this place.

http://www.mackay-marine.co.uk/page-200 ... 03418.html

Could anybody tell me if the Gearbox oil listed on this page is ok to use in 40+?

Thanks
Paul

I do not believe you want a special high pressure oil in a seagull. You local garage should have ep140 or maybe a framers/crofters supplies.
I have been to Aberdeen and I am almost certain that some of the fish and chips shops are using the right sort of oil

My first wife was a manager of one of floors in Bewleys in Grafton st. I used to over quite a bit before we were married.
The black stuff in the pubs in Dublin needed 20 minutes rest before you could drink it.
You could stand a spoon up in it.
Prob Ok in a seagull EP 140 (extra potent)

Right think i have the 140 sorted. Tried to test to see if there was a spark. i couldn see any but the spark plug is about 20 years old.
I tried to remove the top plate on the fly wheel to clean the points but no luck.
Anybody ever have this problem?

Hmm i opened up the condenser box and had a look at the contact points. When i spin the wheel they didn't move at all. It looks like it has been opened up before as suggested by Hugs. Anyway i adjusted the adjustable point and got it to the thickness of a postcard. Still no spark. But the magnets are still magnetic. Ill buy a gauge tomorrow and set the points to the correct width.

just give it a good spin with the electric drill and socket attachment on the dome nut,
don't do the foolish dangerous act and leave the plug in, take it out and keep it attached to the plug lead,

You do realize the points have to be clean, right? As in a few light strokes each point contact with a points file, then cotton swab with alcohol or something to remove any possible oil or grease, then draw some non coated paper through them. Not much use just gapping them, if the motor has not been run for a while, especially in an area near the sea or other damp.

I cleaned the points and opened them up. but the HT lead i have is over 30 years old so that might pose a problem:)
Going to order a one from him and try that. After i do the MultiMeter test.
