Hugz,
Is it ok if I put some filler on the bracket you sent me? I took it down to the foundry to have a chat... It is not an easy casting to do, it can be done but will need a bit of work on the part first. Even if it was a good working part it would need the work.

I will try and catch you on Skype over the weekend.

Got the filler and a bit of paint on the donor bracket / pattern.

Took it to the foundry late last week for them to have a look at and give there opinion. He is going to have a go at it and come back to me.....
Still not the easiest part to cast, we think it was made with a 2 part pattern ( I dont want to cut this one to make it like that)

I'm glad it's you doing this & not me Nudge, it's starting to look like a huge amount of work, just to cast them!

When you factor in pattern making, casting costs, machining time, studs, nuts, fetaling & polishing you might end up with a component that costs more than the original motor!

I dont mind spending my time working on the pattern. The more work I do on parts like this the more I learn how much effort went into these engines....A Lot!

As I have said before Any part can be remade it just comes down to the amount of effort and cost.

Dumb question I know, but which parts are we making here?

Looking back I can see that this started with the V-Strut and has moved on to the tilt stay assembly.

Has the production of other parts been considered eg the upper and lower couplings for the SD side clamp assembly, and/or even entire skeletal brackets?

Spiro

Spiro you can still find the original upper & lower bronze bits for the iron side mount bracket.

Let me know what you need.

For a complete NEW skeletal bracket, one off, finished, I'd guess very close to $1000 aus. Silly money!

Noted Hugz, was just asking in order to understand what's already on the go. Definitely not asking for anything to be added to the list.

Nice bag of bit Charles. I really won't know what i need until the SD arrives ... hopefully next week. At this stage, I'm thinking just the lower clamp for the iron side mount but i may need other parts as well.

If you have a lower clamp for sale, please don't hesitate to pm me.

Spiro

Why not cast an aluminium alloy one, I'd like one 'cause I snapped one of mine. I looked at my motors and have a brass one and an alloy one, with an almost complete mounting clamp.
All of my brackets do not have the central web (maybe thats why it broke.)
Looks like a simple casting job.

We are talking about the brass skeletal bracket which is a different bracket to the standard one. There is a slight difference in the V struts and it needs to be brass/bronze to keep to original. Plenty of parts for your bracket are available Rob.

Interesting that my brass strut does not have the centre bar, and that its an identical casting the the alloy V-strut.
Of course you could also bend up a 6mm round bar as an emergency V-strut.

I have not forgoten....
Quite the oppisite....
Had to make another core and print to be able to get the part out of the sand.

IMG_3071.jpg
Then in between jobs (Some of us still have to work  ) I got back down to the foundry to start making some moulds
IMG_3103.jpg
IMG_3107.jpg
Even the core box is made in sand (if the run was any bigger I would make a wooden core box)
IMG_3104.jpg
Now the biggest problem is the time it takes for the sand to harden, the colder the day the longer it takes. On a warm day there is about 5 ~ 10 min working time at the moment it is more like 15~ 20 min. The part can't be demoulded for a further 15 ~ 20min depending on the temp.

More to come
