I’ve just begun a complete restoration of my seagull 40plus I’ve owned since new in 1966. It’s a cosmetic restoration as the machine runs perfectly although laid up some 21 years ago. I’ve started it, runs well with excellent water flow from engine block. My preventative measures years ago have proven correct.

My question and seek advice is as follows. I want to restore as close as possible to new, the brass transom clamp. The colour match for the fly wheel. I’ve taken the flywheel off and the original paint is like new underneath. It’s probably n old question but is there a close match available off the shelf. Also the shaft chrome is badly pitted so will need sanding of some sort. Is there a chrome like paint available or any other suggestion would certainly be appreciated.

I’ve taken gear box apart, quite surprised there was horrible water but thankfully nothing worse. Easy clean up.

Gear oil 140 hard to get in NZ Whats an alternative.

After long search I could find gear oil 140 in a lorry repair workshop.

Thanks Sandro. You have given me and idea. There are a number of lorry (Trucks in NZ) workshops where I live as there’s quite a bit of logging done here notwithstanding the million acres of grapes.

Why not try contacting Graham at Simply Seagulls in Taranaki, he must know an oil supplier that stocks it your end of the world.

Another option is to take a thinner gear oil such as 90 grade and mix in some general purpose grease in to thicken it a bit.

Nice job! Next you should find a nice 102 or little 40 to work on :P

Re oil for my 40plus gear box. I have been fortunate to obtain SAE 140 gear oil the shelf in a specialist classic and vintage car retail parts supplier here in Blenheim NZ. It’s a Penright Oil product called Transoil T140. It’s labeled description is “For use in Vintage, Veteran and Edwardian gearboxes and selected rear axles that recommend an APL GL-SAE 140 oil”.

I understand that whilst Penright is an Australian owned Manufacturer it’s products are available Worldwide.
