Genuine “barn find”

Post by never-outbored »

Put out an alert on “Nextdoor” for British seagull outboards and got a hit.

Looks like it’s had very little use, she’s a keeper!
Does anyone recognise the crate? Says bell woodworking company on the side, believe they sold dinghys with outboards as optional extras.

Well done, nice find the motor looks realy good.
Bell Woodworking made the GP 14 that’s why that dinghy class has a Bell emblem in the main sail.
You could buy them as a kit for home building, everything came accurately machined to size, it’s my guess that a lot of the shorter parts would fit in that box and somewhere a long the way the Seagull took up residency!

Inside of the box has a wooden cross support at the height of the transom bracket that the motor sits on, so the box looks like it has been made to house a seagull originally.

Bell woodworking in Leicester also made mirror dinghy kits, very popular in the 1970s, I’ve got one in my garage, that has never been built! It was really common to see a seagull on the back of a mirror, so no surprise if they sold seagulls to go with the boats?

Took the tank off today and gently removed the flaky paint, and I’m going to try and restore it whilst retaining the original decals. Has anyone attempted paint touch ups with enamel paint? Either with a fine brush or an airbrush. Pics of the tank below:

Painted the flywheel and put a couple of clear coats on the tank to try and preserve it.
