No marks at all................it is cheap in there.

Cast piston etc.

Quick Edit

The piston and the con-rod are both green sand machined to size and location.

The rod has jig clamp witness for centres and straightness.

304 has the same ring pins.

Con-rod as yours. Ugly but very sturdy.

Piston skirt is 2.2525"

Piston pin height = to BS.

Exhaust tube is exactly 15".

Exhaust port has a bridge.

BS style drive shaft. Fits over 0.37" square section.

Whitworth fasteners inc coarse threads.

They spared no cost saving measures with these. Hardware shop stock items. 8)

Crankcase and cylinder were silver frosted.

Gearbox/WP housing as well.

Was going to make a correction about the threads but you beat me to it B.

Bought a BSW / BSF thread gauge yesterday and confirmed threads are in fact BSW.

Interesting that UNC nuts fit easily, but I tried the reverse also and find that BSW nuts will bind against UNC threads. Pitch must therefore be same, but with different angles. Learn something every day.

B, please measure ring gaps when positioned towards spark plug end of the bore and advise. I will be doing same.

Am finding it difficult to accurately measure pun diameter with my limited tools.

Charles, you've asked a lot of questions which have been answered. I've asked one of you re ring gap and have got zip in return. Please, if you could share your thoughts, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks & Regards
S

As B has kindly confirmed piston heights are same as Seagull, I now plan to fit Seagull piston on to the Olympic conrod, and seagull barrel on to the Olympic crank case. I will also check if the seagull barrel fits to the Olympic exhaust tube.

If the outcome is positive, a solution becomes available to owners of Olympic outboards with crusty barrel.

S

I started to measure the ring gap............and stopped!

I have of course handled the rings and with another observation re ring locating pin.....I need to do the testing from a different perspective.

It is what it is but the reason why exactly could be rather ........thinking out of the square........pretty bloody 8)

Hang aye.

Another Australian Olympic has turned up in Oz, this one in Lilydale VIC, engine number '450'.

The vendor is the daughter of the original owner (now deceased) and is looking for a good home for his two motors.

The other, with the broken gearbox fin, is a British Seagull AD19664.

The two motors have swapped some parts, with the green-painted tank, glassbowl fuel filter, carburettor and probably throttle cable and throttle mechanism from the Olympic at present on the Seagull.

You'll note the Olympic (with black Seagull tank) has the typical Olympic carry handle, and in one pic you can clearly see the cavitation plate evident on the gearbox that was typical of Olympics.

Thanks to Bruce (collectorinspector) for the above ID. At first blush I just assumed it was an owner-painted Seagull. Doh.

Have advised the vendor it's worth around $350-400 in this condition. Anyone local in VIC wants it, let me know and I'll put you in touch.

Nice find!

However with most advertised in recent times in the $100 to $150 range, I would think that runner in very nice original condition would be worth $250 at best. I'm not quite seeing that here, but it may just be the photos!

I sincerely hope you haven't set the owner up for disappointment.

It is located within half hour from me. I would love to see it and be able to make a decent offer, but am concerned that their expectations now are very unrealistic.

S

Just sharing some pics of Olympic # 450 after a clean up by its previous owners.

I am also happy to say it is now part of my collection.

It is in great condition for its age, turns over smoothly, has a heap of compression and a healthy spark.

The chrome and aluminium are in really nice condition with only minimal rust and oxidisation.

The tank brackets and transom clamps have lost their original nickel plating, so I plan to get those redone soon. I'll have the tank straps cleaned up at the same time, and will repair and repaint the tank, tiller and cylinder to bring it back to as near as possible ex-factory condition. Along the way, it will also receive a new throttle cable and fuel hose which is currently missing.

Being a more recent build than those mentioned earlier in this thread, # 450 features the cavitation plate water-pump/exhaust housing and is a nice addition to the collection.

More pics down the track.

S
