Australian 50's Tornado

Post by AusAnzani »

A BIG note of thanks must go to SOS member Notav8 for putting me on to this one. It was advertised on eBay under maintenance and therefore easily missed.

It has been in one family since new and powered a 14 timber boat used for recreational fishing in Port Phillip Bay. It starts on first pull of the cord and runs smoothly throughout the entire rpm range and had received a cosmetic restoration by the son of the original owner some 10 years ago.

Manufactured by Seacraft in Mordialloc Victoria approx 2 km's from where I live. Certainly a nice to addition to the collection.

Originally, this plate would have been riveted to the cowl.

It came with the original tool bag comprising original pull chord, spark plug, spark plug tool, screw driver? and fluid canister (contents smell like areostart or similar) for difficult starting.

There are some major runs in the paint work on the cowl and tank and the tiller was also over-looked during the previous resto. It shows signs of being originally painted in a Silver hammer tone paint. Ans although not very clear from the above, there are signs indicating the barrel and head were originally painted gold.

Whilst I have no plans to change (or correct) anything at this stage, I may give it a tidy up when the whether improves.

Thanks again Notav8.

Thats a Great Little Outboard. 8) Im glad you got it.
Love the little Brass Canister. I used to have something very similar, years ago, but it had a small curved nozzle outlet. I didn't know what it was for.
Maybe we will see this Tornado running in a barrel one day. :P

Hi AusAnzani,

Last time I went down to Steve Green's collection in Mandurah I noticed an outboard that looks quite similar and have just remembered now.
It is branded as a JAP (James Arthur Prestwich?) and looks almost identical apart from the exhaust routing.

I have uploaded pictures to my photobucket - http://s375.photobucket.com/user/AusOB_ ... t=3&page=1

Cheers

Ah yes, Steve Green. I must get in touch with him about a couple of outboards he promised to sell me.

As for the JAP, completely different although I agree many outboards of that era had a similar look about them.

Key differences were engine, magneto and gearbox design but from afar they look pretty much the same.

Stay close to Steve & Bruce. Both great guys who are ready to share their extensive knowledge and experience with you. And if you're ever over this way (Melbourne) don't hesitate to look me up.

Cheers.

Great score!

FYI a couple of pics of "The Big One".........paint scheme may be obvious.

The Trojan Cyclemotor" is basically bullet proof by the way.

They came with Amal or Dellorto carby.
