Latest Old Dear

Post by Collector Inspector »

Proud owner of another Australian Seasprite. This one is an example of the last of them before they went belly up.

Not often one like this turns up. It is as good as the other, First Production that I have already.

Progress

No spark, coil has got hot at some time. Put a meter to it and open circuit.

Short coil and JM9 Dec 1956 so will get all new Coil, Condenser and lead kit from Villiers. End of any problem then.

Must have died very soon after it was purchased as very little use on machine.

Pleased about that 8)

Rather nice as the flywheel has the captive nut. Just unscrewed it from the crank shaft.

Pics as below.

Well, that all worked out very nicely!

Ignition bits on the way just now. Thank you George and help from John.

$AU 200 basically.

The motor is worth far more than this expenditure and initial purchase and freight so :D :D :D :D :D

Easiest recovery of an Old Dear yet.

Cheers

Well, here I sit with the ship's cat on my lap contemplating having no parts.

I feel somewhat deflated actually.

Last I heard ......when I had to ask just recently........was that there was no stock of coils yet.

No indication as of when which is helpful not. Just like the last time :(

Rather bothersome actually.....................

AU$193.00 of parts coil and bits is gaining interest in someone elses bank account.

Nice for some Aye!

Pain is that the Old Dear is sitting on a rack like some 1/2 demented and ignored rubbish bin diver. Not what it deserves at all.

I try to be a provider of new life and pride with My Mates with Propellers.....................Sadly I have been let down by those most up front in being "The Way to Go For Any Parts Required". My intention was to do the right thing by the Sea Sprite as soon as I could.

Obviously it will be as soon as a lack of interest can manage.

I will keep you all informed as to progress.

How hard can a Villiers coil actually be?

Especially when payment in full was taken.

Maybe the other parts that were included need to be attached to a coil. That would explain why no effort has been made to send them first with a back order notification for a coil to follow.

Ships' Cat is a comfort for now..........................

G'day Collector Inspector.

Another Aussie recently joined. Melbourne based!

Have been looking at a Seaprite similar to yours for a while now. Owner is asking $450 which seems a bit rich considering it's missing a few bits and bobs. On the plus side, it's not seized, seems to have good compression and is reasonably tidy. All original and unresored

What are your thoughts on that sort of price tag?

PS: I think you might have pipped me on this one. Was it an eBay pruchase, Melbourne based owner?

I saw a post from someone on a totally different site, he is having the same problem, other parts turned up, but no Villiers coil so far, same supplier I suspect.

I am considering getting a refund and using Greens. I have had great service and communication over the years.

This may well be a heads up for anyone wanting "Interesting Ignition Parts"

Yes I got the motor above from Ebay so maybe I pipped you as you have indicated.

Please reply with any photos of what you expect to be buying for 450. You can use this topic for that not a problem.

As regards to any worth of these Australian Old Dears....................If one turned up in a box like this one from the factory it would be a AU700 max 1965.

This one in the post, even after ignition repairs and tank decals is AU600

New one in a box with paperwork 1947 would be AU900.

1947 complete original running would be AU700.

Sellers often think that something old is worth a Squid. You must look very closely, especially Seasprites for bad blocks. You get a motor with a bad block then it is a parts only motor .................AU50.

If not running but complete..............AU200 Compression and spark original prop and carb.

Something like a runner MUST be able to be started easily manufacturers system multiple times over a 48 hour running test. A stated motor being a runner should be able to be useable every day for 2 weeks. Something like that would be AU400.

Then you need some experience in noting all of the parts and bits attached.

Like all Australian outboards.............................they were butchered over time so be somewhat cautious when first having an interest in Australian Outboards.

I have only two AU manufactured motors to add to my collection so as to have everything ever offered to the Australian market. Many parts motors and spec parts buying along the way last 10 years to achieve that. Yes, can get somewhat of an obsession so beware.

The first one made, 1942 engine number 007 really rocked my boat! (Commando).

As I said, please reply with pics of any Seasprite that you may have found aye?

You can also PM Me but maybe not in replying to this instead as there are whole lot of outboard enthusiasts out there that would probably like to follow along or chip in.

Regards

I`ve never done one, but would it not be possible to rewind with new wire. I have rewound a microwave transformer some time back because it was not possible to get a new one and a Villiers coil is hardly rocket engineering. I would guess there is a thick wire for a certain length with a tail wire going to the points then a thinner longer wire finishing going to earth. Just a thought.....

Coil rewinding posts are archived on SOS going a long way back.

Not Rocket but definitely for the able.
