Re: About to start 45 Featherweight after 35 years —gear oil question

For breif testing in the tank, SAE90 would be OK and no damage should occur. Just make sure it’s topped up before running. But for running on the water you will definitely want to use 140. The main issue, especially with well-used motors, is that SAE90 isn’t thick enough to form a proper seal betwee...

Re: https

Site now upgraded to https using a shiny new SSL certificate. May take some time for user browsers to reflect the update due to old cookies and locally cached files (these can be refreshed manually by pressing Ctrl+Shift+R in Chrome for example). And, there is still some work to do updating/redirect...

Trouble logging in / password reset emails not delivered November 2022

Hi everyone, it has come to my attention that password reset emails are not being sent properly from the forum. Other emails such as registration and post reply notifications appear to be working normally. I am looking into this, however it may take some time to debug as the problem appears to be du...

Hugo, happy to post a higher resolution version. Please send a copy of the PDF to webmaster@saving-old-seagulls.co.uk and I will post on the forum one way or another. Also if you are willing to send a copy in the original format you have (word, excel?) I can see about converting/posting it on the ma...

Re: Forty+ Wonky flywheel.

Approach really depends on what you want to get out of the motor. If you want to run it on the water, would definitely address the wobble, 4mm rise is a lot. Or, polish and display in your living room! Could be bent flywheel or bent crank shaft, caused by dropping or attempted flywheel removal. In m...

Re: Amal carb banjo fiber washers

I’ve had limited success with nylon washers, which are readily available at Home Depot etc. Some aren’t pliable enough to seal but others are OK for test runs etc. Getting right size can be tricky, and really have to check that they don’t leak and that the material they’re made of is safe for gasoli...

Re: Amal carb banjo fiber washers

I’ve tried O rings without success. Found you can’t get the bolt in tight enough to prevent it rattling loose without effectively squishing the O ring so much that it loses its seal.

Re: Something happened

Wish I could inherit that lot! Would give me a year of projects to work on, as if I need more :P Does look like a barge pusher prop on the left, always wanted one of those even though I have nothing practical to run one on. Hope you have fun sorting through them. If you have the time please post mor...

Re: Seagull 40+ for sale

With a view to encouraging fair trading on this board and as a public reference for others in the future, I would echo the sentiment that this appears to be a widely available model on other internet auction sites these days at possibly more competitive pricing. As with all old motors, potential buy...

Re: bugger!!

Did the stud shear flush with the block, or is there still a few mm of stud protruding? If the latter, a ton of heat from the torch until red hot and a pair of vice/mole grips will usually get it out even if only a couple mm to grip. A whack on the grips with a heavy hammer while red hot will usuall...

A picture will help members give better suggestions.

This is a common problem, did you use heat when removing the bolts?
