My only 'baby-Seagull' is a 40 minus - the exhaust tube is secured with a single screw into the exhaust port of the block. Dunno if this is true for all ...Keith.P wrote:Its just, I didn't think the little model 40's had a clamp.

Re: How to fit a new cork for a fuel tap
Interesting, Phil - I did think of doing something similar, but thought that the cork would just break up. I'll have a go next time I empty a bottle (which is the best excuse I've heard yet for sourcing cork ...) I tried the O-ring method (once), but I guess the O-ring material needs to be correct -...

Re: Tip for removing a flywheel
I do change the nut for an old one that does not matter before I bash, have not used a lump hammer yet. Ah - forgot to include the 'change the nut' if you have a spare .... Clarification - just because I use a club hammer (c. 2lbs), it shouldn't be inferred that I strike down with serious force. It...

Tip for removing a flywheel
I usually work on my own, and over a few years have so far removed 5 flywheels successfully using the following technique: Having removed the cover plate, thin rope is fed carefully under each 'spoke' of the flywheel (making sure nothing internal is being trapped) and tied into a loop. The rope I pr...

Re: How to fit a new cork for a fuel tap
These are the ones I bought: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/FOUR-NEW-PETROL-TAP-PLUNGER-CORKS-made-England-/360333877700?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item53e592a1c4 but only because I didn't spot Keith P's advert ... Nice one. Still, a quid a piece is still a lot better than some crooks are charging...

Re: How to fit a new cork for a fuel tap
Resurrecting an old thread here .... I've just replaced a couple of corks - the first I soaked in water for an hour - went on sort-of ok(ish) with the help of some Vaseline .... but the tap is still a tad stiff. The second I soaked overnight in warm water with a single drop of washing-up liquid adde...

Re: 102 'plumbing'
Thanks Jan - that clears up another small mystery. The pipe on this 102 looked exactly like your photo - except that it's become brittle with age and has snapped in two. Think I'll stay with the hose method then - I'll clamp the top end, and leave the bottom end 'loose', so that I can simply pull it...

102 'plumbing'
I'm just putting a 102 TC back together after a mini-strip-down, and I'm curious about the external water-pipe connecting head to exhaust tube. On my other 102 the pipe is copper, but on this one there's a length of plastic pipe with 2x 1/2" BSP 6mm(ish) hosetails. Is this a bodge, or is it sta...

How does this happen ?
Unlike some of the 'life-time' experts here, I've only been dabbling with Seagulls for the last 10 years, but even in that time I've come across some pretty serious cases of neglect: one gearbox was filled 'to the brim' with marine concretion and 'dried sand' - looked ok from the outside, but dry as...

Re: Off with it's head!
I'm doing (another) one at the moment. I find it's just as quick to deliberately shear the heads off, then drill-out and re-tap the threads. Last time I did this I replaced the bolts with studs, so that the head could be pulled off in another 20 years time without all this faffing about. I'll probab...

Villiers magneto reliability
This afternoon found me firing-up my eighth Villiers-powered Seagull. This motley collection dates from 1946 to around 1967(ish), and although 8 isn't a particularly large sample to draw firm conclusions from, I've developed a high level of confidence in this particular ignition system, despite the ...

Well - it's egg on the face time ... Got all me bits together this morning and was about to start construction ... but in view of some of the comments here re: noise - I thought, "ok, let's test the concept first" ('cause arrogant I ain't) - so got me a tank of water and screwed a length o...
