Re: Seagull Trial.

That’s great, do you use a Seagull on yours? Is it difficult to fit all the baskets in? With this one I’ve extended the forward thwart aft and fitted another set of sockets for the crutches so I can row from forward. Yes they have very high initial stability but like a flat bottom boat that righting...

Re: ht connector spring bits

Had one of my leads apart this morning the wood screw is #1 x 3/4" brass flat head. #1 gauge is 5/64" diamante (2mm) (Sorry that should have read Diameter) had a look through my screws and I do have some but not as long as original. This time original screw was fine so I put it back in and...

Re: Seagull Trial.

Yes it’s a Walker Bay 10, it’s extremely rugged and has stood a beating on the rocks for about 15 years.
It is rather crank so I don’t regard it as a particularly safe dinghy but it is a good work horse.

Seagull Trial.

This is the Work Tender, it lives permanently on the rocky beach and gets pulled up and down over the kelp. Usually I just row around the moorings but today I decided to give the Featherweight an outing. Outboard 114.jpg At a quarter throttle it goes along faster than I can row! Outboard 112.jpg Str...

Re: Latest Addition to the Shed.

Discovered that the thread in the End-cap of the Gearbox for the white plastic Plug is damaged is it 3/4" BSF? OK so everything serviced and ready for reassembly, this is the least warn of my four Seagulls and doesn’t seem to have done that much work. Outboard 082.jpg The gear box is like new w...

Re: Latest Addition to the shed.

So finally got round to working on this 40 Plus, scraped and chipped off the hard grey filler to expos the open crankcase joint. Started up again and was surprised to see oil appearing at the tiller pivot. When I put my finger near the joint the escaping air was enough to dimple the skin and was blo...

Re: Long shaft Seagulls

Hi Mark, as far as I’m aware all models except the 40 Featherweight came with an option of standard or long shaft. So a 40 Plus long shaft would probably be suitable for your boat they were recommended for 10 to 14 foot boats.
Sally Brown looks like a good boat to fish.

Re: Oh Dear! What have I done.

Thanks Jeremy, it’s good to hear from someone who has more experience of these outboards than me. I forgot to say that the tiller is bent and I was wondering if the crankcase got damaged at the same time and was replaced by as you suggest a local dealer. Thanks again for the feedback much appreciate...

Re: Oh Dear! What have I done.

So she is back together and running well. There was corrosion around the cap to gearbox joint so I used some fine Carborundum paste to lap that joint in. Then carefully measured up for a new screw. Important to get the length right so it holds both the cap and pinion. With the cap back on without a ...

Re: Spark Plugs

Hi Mark,
The 6 is hotter than the 7.
The upside of a hotter plug is that it will keep itself clean by burning off the oil deposits, but one step up or down is not going to make a big difference. The A6 is thr recommended plug.

Re: Oh Dear! What have I done.

Thanks Charles, Yes I was aware that the screw locked the pinion in place and measured up before drilling so I didn’t drill into the pinion but only just touched the bush. It’s also a shorter screw on this end of the Cap. The trouble is there is no engine number stamped on the crankcase! Will post s...

Re: Oh Dear! What have I done.

No sign of a date on the flywheel inside or out Huze but thanks anyway. Generally the Featherweight looks in good condition but the gear box is in trouble. It was heavily corroded inside when I got it open. Previously the thread on the plastic plug had been striped because the thread in the cap was ...

Thanks Huze, you must have posted while I was typing, will look into that today.

Oh Dear! What have I done.

Outboard 009.jpg Well I have bought another Forty, this one does not have an engine number but the crank case on a superficial look resembles the one on my 1967 FP 40 Plus. The new one has a Featherweight/Minor gear box and a Villiers fly wheel instead of the Wipac on the 1967, it also has a bronze...
