Re: Starting in Reverse?

OK firstly there will be no need to say Honest at the end of this! Most two strokes will run backwards some are even designed to do so. There are many big marine engines that are coupled directly to the prop shaft with no gearbox involved. Most of the these engines are two stroke diesels with sleeve...

Anyone with spare time?

You have probably seen them , couple of little forties on the bay at the moment, one in Bristol 274110180012 and the other in North Wales, Holyhead 163958005564.

Just the thing for a winter project!

Re: FREE!!!! Come get it....

Yes remember your story of this motor from when I first joined the group. Was impressed then that you managed to get the motor striped and was equaly impressed that she ran again!
A nice gesture to give her away, hope someone will take up the offer.

Re: Orkney dinghy

Hi John, Probably a lot of influence from the Yole in your boat, it’s difficult to tell from your photo if there is any drag to the keel? Although fitted with a transom it looks quite high so the underwater lines could be close to the double ended Yole with the raked sternpost. People tended to buil...

Re: Anneal new head gasket?

Just use it as it is, it will have been made of half hard copper, you only need to anneal when it’s been used and has become hard from being compressed.

Re: Orkney dinghy

Nice traditional boat, is there any sign that she was sailed, such as a mast step on the hog or a hole through one of the thwarts? In researching your boat there are two authors I know of who wrote about boats in your area. Arthur Johnston who wrote books such as “Scottish Fishing Craft” 1936. Stuar...

Re: hybrid

Hybrid, ha for a moment there I thought you might be going to convert it to potato power, some sort of gear box with a crank on the end of it! It’s finding a nut to go on the end of the crank that’s the difficult part  .

Re: Reliability

Never rely on any engine inboard, outboard, vintage or modern, an engine is more likely to get you into trouble than out of it. When I used a seagull outboard to do this years Pembroke Rally I also carried an Anchor with a length of chain and a rode, along with a good set of Oars. Just as well as I ...

Re: Long distance Seagull trip.

125 miles with a seagull is a real feat of endurance, probably can’t hear SWMBO any more which is the one merit.
Did 25 miles last week and was glad to get out of the dingy with all the noise and smoke and get back out sailing with out an engine.

No the inflatable did not come from Greenock Tam but I was happy to take the ferry out of there to Kilcreggan. To many monkeys at that place up on the hill for me :)

The motor is all back together with new oil and tested this afternoon, ready for the next adventure.

Re: My SD

The Centuries and the Forties have square blocs with removable heads and that is the sort of motors I have rather than the round block with integral head on the 102's

That looks brilliant those 102 are very elegant.
Don’t think I’ve ever seen one just the square blocks.
