Re: Steel Head and Base Plates

Yeah Oyster - you're exactly right.

The steel studs were a mess, as you can imagine living in all that crap for decades. I like to reuse whatever I can, I like the thought of keeping things as they were from the factory, but the the steel studs were beyond salvation, they were so deeply corroded, I ...

Re: Steel Head and Base Plates

Thanks guys - yeah, sorry, my mistake. Its a bit like blindfolding you then asking you about my engine.

Someone has obviously been at it, because I don't think its a Long Shaft any more.

Steel Head and Base Plates

G'day Guys - I'm just having a bit of a Brain Fade. I disassembled a Fourty quite a while back and I've now got most of the parts I need and reassembly has commenced.

The question is.....

The Steel Head and Base Plates.

One obviously goes between the top of Crank Case and the Bottom of the Barrel ...

Re: Mercury 3.3hp No Tell Tale Water

Exhaust backflow causing the problems - brilliant thought!!

I'll start having a look at that.

Unfortunately I'm away from home for 2 weeks working out in rural NSW - as soon as I get home I'll start investigating this.

Great thought - thanks!

Re: Mercury 3.3hp No Tell Tale Water

I hope so!!

It works when the drive shaft is spun by a cordless drill.

Looks identical (but newer) to the old one I took out.

Seems to fit in the Water Pump OK - not loose around the edges.

I reckon its the right one.

Re: Mercury 3.3hp No Tell Tale Water

OK - this is getting a bit silly now......

I pulled off the Gear Box yet again and connected a hose to the bottom end of the Water Pipe, the end that slips into the Water Pump housing.

I turned on the hose and was greeted by the lovely sight of a nice, solid stream of water coming out of the Tell ...

Re: Mercury 3.3hp No Tell Tale Water

G'day Again Silver Surfer.

Your suggestion keeps playing on my mind - the fact that the only time I can't get it to work is with the motor running (with powerhead off and spinning with a drill it appears to work OK - at least up to the level of the powerhead).

As I mentioned previously, I have ...

Re: Mercury 3.3hp No Tell Tale Water

G'day Silver Surfer,

A good thought, thanks, but I've tried it in Neutral, so the prop is not spinning. I've also tried it with the prop off - No joy.

Today I'm going to pull the power head off again and see if there is anything in there that I have missed.

But I'm clutching at straws - I am ...

Mercury 3.3hp No Tell Tale Water

Howdy,

I've just finished a rebuild of a little Mercury 3.3 2 stroke, about 2000 model.

Everything works OK - except the Tell Tail. It runs - Gears (Forward & Neutral) work - all seems good, except the Tell Tail. As part of the rebuild I put in a new Impeller/Water Pump kit.

Trouble Shooting so ...

Re: Mine Won't Start Either....

Well - I've got my answer - so r hubt of

Fresh fuel/oil mix at 10:1 and she's starting and running wonderfully.

The only other change was adjusting the carby needle retaining screw out 2 and 1/2 turns to sit flush with the top of the slide.

So it was old, degraded fuel.

How embarrassing ...

Re: Mine Won't Start Either....

They were cleaned and set as part of the rebuild.

Producing a nice big fat spark.

More info:

The needle is No: 3 - ie: fuel ratio of 10:1

But when I pulled it out, I found the small Needle retaining screw set to 2 1/2 full turns below level with the top of the slide.

I assume that would set the ...
