Well mud was grey and gritty, like Essex mud, the oil was still oily and on top of mud. What stops water entering gearbox on a good seagull? Is it just the to tightness of the shaft in it's brass bearing bush?

Thanks Charles, I cant get down to see John for a few weeks with work commitments. Sounds like I will need to strip off old geabox then. Is there a guide anywhere as to how to go about this?
