I've found a seagull branded device that looks like the two handles on the top of a shooting stick that folds out to be the seat. It's made of cast ali, and appears to be a clamp of some sort. Any ideas what it is?

I have exactly the same AD series motor, c1950-51, so I have been reading this thread with great interest. It belonged to my grandfather who bought it in 1953. It's exhaust note is the soundtrack of my childhood as my father "inherited" it in the mid-60s. My father was and is a keen trout fisher.
