Re: What holds the crank bush in place?
Grinding paste is horrible stuff to use in that application, you will struggle to get it all out of the Bush and any left behind will carry on grinding.
I'd check the fit in the crank case and make or buy an oversized bush.

Sounds like deep sea salvage! Good luck, thankfully they are simple little engine's.

Re: Cooling water 40
They were well corroded in, don't think they were coming out without a blast of heat. It's all back together again ready for a test in the tank if it ever stops raining.
Next job is to set it up for 25:1 I didn't enjoy sitting in the cloud of smoke from 10:1!

Re: Seagull Parts and the Mini Lathe
The seagull is the newest thing in my workshop, I have a Smart and Brown lathe from the 50's and an equally old Pallas V1 vertical mill, I haven't got the head height for a turret mill.

Re: Seagull Parts and the Mini Lathe
Nice job, no workshop is complete without a lathe, now you need to talk your wife into the absolute need for a Bridgeport....... it's a slippery slope you have started on

Re: Cooling water 40
No joy with stillsons but the MIG did the job. I'll see if I can get a couple of cap heads tomorrow, failing that it's going metric.
The bottom gasket looks like asbestos, fortunately it came off whole so it's going back with a smear of silicon to worry about another day.

Not yet, I'll have a look at them later, I think I will have to weld a couple of nuts on the broken stubs, they are well corroded.

Cooling water 40
A nice relaxing day on the river turned into an hour of hard rowing when the cooling water stopped flowing, lucky I noticed it before it cooked the engine! I've stripped the pump and found lots of sludge in the housing and blasted air through the block and leg releasing a load more, looks like there...

Re: 1961 Johnson 5.5hp
Good to hear, this one has had a hard life. The recoil start mounts are all broken off the engine so it's going to need a visit to the tig, the gear shift is also erratic so I'll be stripping the bottom end which was worryingly dry when I pulled the drain plug, it's currently full of engine oil to m...

Re: 1961 Johnson 5.5hp
Funny you should say that, I have just been poking round the ignition system, only 1 plug has a spark, peeping in the inspection hole the insulation is falling apart, so I'll add them onto the list!

1961 Johnson 5.5hp
Just bought a classic Johnson, 11 years older than my little 40 and sadly in much worse condition, but on the bright side it was only £13.50!
