Re: Are Seagull water-injected exhausts a myth ?
Thanks Phil and others who have discussed the idea of raising and lowering an engine within a motor well. It's nice to know that someone has designed a boat (NIS 26) that can provide for such a feature. My boat is smaller (23') and would not be feasible to have a standard shaft motor raised and ...

Re: Are Seagull water-injected exhausts a myth ?
hhmmmmm.... thanks for the info. I think I'm going to try starting out my season with the two exhaust holes plugged with self-tapping screws smeared generously with high temp silicone. Also plan to seal top of exhaust tube with high temp silicone. I bought a cheap laser tach and bench marked the ...

Re: Are Seagull water-injected exhausts a myth ?
Would that be using the British Seagull called a "midi"?
If I could design the perfect motor for my sailboat, it would look like a 40- or 40+ at the top, but then have a retractable lower unit that could be cranked up or down inside the motor well. Down so the prop protrudes into the water and ...

Re: Are Seagull water-injected exhausts a myth ?
I may try just plugging the holes and see how that works with starting and general engine performance. But I am starting to study and collect the brass parts I would need to try and build the mechanism to let cooling water flow shut the hole after motor is started. Seems pretty ingenious. I've got ...

Re: Are Seagull water-injected exhausts a myth ?
"insufficient cylinder scavenge for the motor to start"
I was hoping to plug up those two holes in the exhaust tube to cut down on the amount of exhaust buildup in the motor well (and then in the cockpit) where I have my Seagull. Is that not a good idea?

Re: Dutch Seagull
Being on an inland lake, my 40- Seagull is all the motor I need on my sailboat when the wind fails, but if I ever move to a bigger body of water with strong currents, I may buy a newer/bigger motor, but I agree... the Seagull stays, it's worth it's weight! I've puttered away from too many docks on ...

so... not all SJM models were created equal?
I've been accumulating some spare parts for my 40 minus SJM model, and I was (apparently) mistaken that any SJM part would work on mine. In particular, the magneto base plate, though it is stamped with the exact same part number, they are different??? Some have a bib (or shelf or whatever it's ...

Re: Need fuel line connection for Villiers 40-
Not sure because it was several years ago, but I don't thing the tank fit turned the other way around.. those little nobby things interfered with the flywheel. She's not an ornament. She's a working girl.

Re: Need fuel line connection for Villiers 40-
Unfortunately part 33 with the unions won't work for me. I need the carb fuel connector with the barbed nipple as shown in my picture. Either that, or I need a standard 40- SJM fuel tank with the tap on the port side of the tank. When I bought my 40-SJM it had a red cylindrical tank held on with ...

Need fuel line connection for Villiers 40-
I have a 40- SJM model with an odd carburetor fuel connection/fuel tank, etc.
Is this Villiers carb. fuel hose connector (see picture) a standard part that can still be purchased?

Thanks,

Re: Rowing
Actually, the "DIlemma" is only 6 ft long (3 ft. wide in the beam). Allowed Capacity works out to about 180 lbs... so I need to watch how much weight I put on during the winter months. I use it to get to and from my moored boat. Only weighs 25 lbs.

Re: Happy New Year
Unfortunately, we are all sober here in Pittsburgh because our whole family (including little six month old grandson Joey IV) have had a bad bout of the stomach flu which has put a damper on our New Years celebration plans. :(
However we are all still hopeful for a great 2011. Someday I hope my ...

Re: eBay flywheel/magneto assembly works!
Thanks! I'll look for copper foil. I tried wedging gasket paper in there, but it just wasn't durable enough. The wobble affecting points gap may explain why I think the new flywheel/magneto base makes my 40- sound stronger... the wobbly one may not have been firing on every stroke. It will be ...

eBay flywheel/magneto assembly works!
Took a chance on an SJM style (Mark I) flywheel/magneto assembly I saw on eBay. Rather than tear it apart to test coil and condensor, I just cleaned it up and slapped it on my 40-, set the points and gave it a spin. It started right up on the first pull and sounded stronger than ever (may be wishful ...
