1932 Test of Seagull Outboard (Marston)

Recently I was carrying out some research at the British Library. It was for a book I am co-authoring on a Victorian gunmaker. I was looking through the 1932 April issue of 'Game and Gun' magazine. They had a sailing section somewhat surprisingly. And there was a test on a 'good British outboard mot...

Re: This 40- looks like a good project.

Here is my SJM for comparison. It is SJM 2121 D7 from April 1967. Bought new for me by my father (for passing an exam!) during the summer hols of 1967. I still have the receipt and handbook. It is totally original, as it left the showroom, with the exception of a new HT lead and cap, replaced when J...

Re: Early Forty Minus

Just by way of comparison, Charles, here is my SJM, number 2121 (April '67), bought brand new for me by my father in the summer holidays of 1967. It must be one of the last ones made. Since then it has not been molested at all, with one exception, John replaced the plug lead and cap when he serviced...

Re: Hayling Island Recce

Very nice classic racing class, not sure of name, but have seen similar in Cowes.H-A That is the classic Westmacot design Solent Sunbeam. The launch was for their first GRP hulled versions. They have two fleets, Falmouth and Itchenor. They race every weekend and their nationals are always held at C...

Re: Proposed Seagull Marathon early next summer 2011 May/Jun

As it stands I already have to be in either/and/or Northamptonshire or Essex 21/22 July so 'fraid I could not do the 40+- event if we go for that w/e

Re: Seagull Newsletter, 'The Gull'

Looks like a service crown, applied to all sorts of military kit, not just Naval, but Army and Air Force too.

I can remember drawing stores from the QMs with that mark on it! We were, after all "In the service of the Crown."

Re: Essex Flocking of Seagulls!

I'm up for it. I drive past Paper Mill every weekend on my way to Burnham on Crouch and it is a very picturesque spot. The inflatable with my Minus on it will be just the job. Pity we can't go all the way to Maldon!

Re: Proposed Seagull Marathon early next summer 2011 May/Jun

I have been thinking about people who may have wanted to be in the race but did not have a long enough boat or a century/102. As the harbour is quite large it should be possible to have a 40+/- class that follows a different route. They could start at the same time and place, follow the pack down t...

Re: Proposed Seagull Marathon early next summer 2011 May/June

Well for the Under 40s we could do a rally, Dell Quay to East Head, picnic lunch and return? It's been a good few years since I sailed up to Dell Quay. At low tide you could not tie up at the Quay itself but I seem to recall there is the ability to launch a dinghy at all states of tide. Clearly we s...

Re: Proposed Seagull Marathon early next summer 2011 May/June

Charles Whilst I would love to do this trip, my boat 'n gull combo do not meet your entirely sensible safety requirements. Could we perhaps coax one or three more people down with their 40's, Featherweights and Minus's, if we had an Under 40s expedition from the start point direct to East Head for a...

Gerard Cold molding. Have you seen any of the Fairey Marine dinghies? Firefly, Albacore, Atalanta etc. They were hot molded, which included being baked in a large oven. Here is an explanation of the process from the Atalanta owners site: During World War II Fairey acquired great expertise in hot mou...

Re: Essex Flocking of Seagulls!

I, my son and grandson had a really enjoyable day. The weather started so well but ended up overcast mostly. My son shot some video footage, which is on YouTube. It took a while for him to get used to the camera though! Here is the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1pc0vnZxSZc My 1967 Minus behav...

Re: Essex Flocking of Seagulls!

I will be there with my trusty one owner, original 1967 Minus, along with son and grandson.

John will also be there so if you need any spares, he could bring them for you!
