Difficult to generalize as some have been repaired/replaced , Model 45 EFS, Model 55 EFPC, Model 75 ESC, Model 80 ESPC. Model 90 EFNR, early 170, early SD110 & SD160.

All have smooth CDI flywheels.

I'm playing with top secret racing stuff at the moment Bruce & if I told you anything I'd have to shoot you!

But here's an example of some of the previous decades tinkering.
variable timing ignition 1
variable timing ignition 1
variable timing ignition 2
variable timing ignition 2
Here's a variable timing ignition built using a Wypac Mk3 that I've since robbed the coil off for another use.

You will see that the ignition module is built so that it can rotate on the base plate & it's moved by rotating the knob held in position by 3 cap head screws, 1 rotation of which will advance or retard the timing by 1 degree (the knob is weighted heavy on one side so it doesn't rotate in use due to vibration) the timing can then be adjusted under load on the boat or on a dyno to establish the best firing point anywhere in the rev range.

Variable timing flywheel with pointer & degree label
Variable timing flywheel with pointer & degree label
The firing point can then be measured using a no dwell strobe & a 12 volt battery, this way you can establish the timing curve for all your Wypac CDI ignitions, Wypac CDI's all have an inbuilt timing advance that advances as the revs rise, & they're all a little bit different.

You have to print your own degree labels 10 degrees is exactly 1/36th of your flywheels circumference & your TDC mark has to be accurate to within 1 degree or all your readings mean nothing.

No you've got a stay of execution, that sort of experimentation is not uncommon among the racing fraternity.

YAY!

Now that my future is ongoing (from this........no idea about the rest of my lifestyle) I shall revisit same thing but using push/pull cable arrangement with indexed limits via thumb lever.

The position is maintained via a flat wound torsion spring.......albeit a rather large one too stabilise the position (any selected) of the base plate.
