hi all,
its not related to my trusty seagull, but i do have a problem with a 1980 solè mini 2 diesel inboard.
i removed the engine and remachined the throttle control rod which was siezed and ever since it has not run properly. engine will start, run poorly for about 30 sec then stall.
has anybody got any ideas??

so far i have:
bled the system - no joy
changed all fuel lines - no joy
changed all fuel filters - no joy
checked compression (normal) and sent off pump and injectors (all fine) - still no joy
was wondering if it was something to do with how throttle rod engages inner workings of engine....

please help
cheers
mike

That sounds very much like that's your problem, but not knowing exactly what you have done, the injector pumps can be very fussy, I would look into what pump it has and get it set right.
I have only had experience with single pot and twin Yanmar's, horrible things they are.

As for most diesel engines, the fuel supply is fairly critical. Any leaks ANYWHERE is NOT what you want.
Double check that there is fuel reaching the injectors and that the fuel pump itself is correctly timed up with the rest of the engine.
The throttle linkage/control rod might well be the problem here as a small amount of throttle opening may be required to start the engine in the first place. Any machining work to this rod will have altered the original settings.
Is there any provision on this rod for any more adjustment?

Can't be much before it coughs into life again.

thank both of your for your replys.

i think the pump is set up properly - i have got all the same shims as it had before i removed it and that is the only possible variable there.

on the throttle rod, it goes into the crankcase and has a brass crook on the end. this crook engages two thin hinged metal strips. should the crook go before the strips, after them or in between???

thanks all

Can you post some pics of whereabouts this rod engages into the engine.

Without knowing what these hinged metal strips actually do or what they look like, i'm none the wiser.

What is the relationship of these "shims" and what do they do?

Are you absolutely sure the pump is correctly timed up. A couple of degrees either way should still have it running, But a few more degrees could spell more trouble.
You mention the engine will start but runs poorly then stalls after 30 seconds or so?
Is this still the case?

Sounds like pump timing to me.

Pics will help a bit more :P

Obviously a problem with whats been replaced, I cannot seem to find any info on this engine to be helpful.
tin hat on and in the bunker.
Some of use aren't that old, but I cannot vouch for the rest of them.

Did you say Lister.
I picked this brass thing up the other week.
