There is a chance that it is asbestos in which case l would suggest you give it a light scrub in a mixture of water and vinegar (no dust) with a toothbrush. Clean the inside windings with a fine grade emery cloth so there is good connectivity as well as the slider. Use a bit of masking tape on the inside, slider contact and connection terminals and varnish the rest (rattle can varnish).

If you can find an old arc welder you can steal the cable for controller to motor and you can cut off the ends of jumper leads for the two cables to the battery. Good fun. Any chance of a vid of it running?

Ha! A cultural difference in terminology. If we want something we ask if we can "steal a bit of that" You would be a bit pissed if somebody hacked off a foot of welder cable. . Like someone cutting a bit of hose for their bong..... why do they always cut off a bit in the middle?

Try a fiber washer, it might be able to take the heat better (maybe)

Have a look on ebay

That is coming up well. Controller works on ohms law. Electrical current is proportional to voltage and inversely proportional to resistance. So not enough current passing through globe to make a difference to voltage. Am l correct Spiro?

Negative temperature coefficient will also impact on the resistance of the controller, fortunately being DC, impedance won't negate conductivity of supply.
