A 40 Plus Mk2, my next project
I have just bead blasted the gear box and 40 plus propellor, next will be cleaning of the power head and fuel tank.
The motor looks to be in good condition but refused to start last time I tried.
I made a note, dated 17/11/2015 ................. Fires now and again
Normal check, fuel, spark etc, no firing though, has anyone got any ideas why?
My notes say this has the Wipac ignition, its is an FP741BB4 serial number , dates to 1974?

Clean the points, then once you have done that.... clean the points! If still no luck change the HT lead.

The skelleton on the bench.
This motor was taken apart two years back, I never got around to working on it again.
Whats missing?
Petrol tank, it is here but quite bashed one end, the carburetor, that is also here and I had made a note saying it has a needle for a 25;1 fuel mix.
With the motor now on the cross bar in the vice I have tested for compression, its tops !
Missing is the hook that keeps the motor tilted up and the prop free of the water, can someone post a picture of what they look like so that I can make one?

Thanks for the image, now I know what is missing, that hook was not on my motor when it arrived.
Progress this far was good, my box of parts is now looking like an engine.

The engine has most of its required parts, next is to sort out the rest of it.
The tank is a spare one, the filler neck was made from a solid brass bar and turned to suit the filler cap, however it does not fit!

A question, do I use the long or the short spring ?
Looks like I use the shorter one?

SOS supplied a new throttle cable, the ends are the same both ends, when fitted there is no free play to open the throttle slide?
Shoul the new cable not have on round end and one bullet end?

Re: A 40 Plus Mk2, my next project
Check with John. I always make my own. Bicycle shops have the cable and fittings and l use the old ends to make a mold for a new one using lead. Make sure you tin the end of the cable first. I drill a hole in timber for the bullet end and use blutack or clay for the round end. There is a bit of burning or smoke but it works effectively. I've had to re-do it a couple of times to get the correct length!

Re: A 40 Plus Mk2, my next project
What I am not understanding is the used cable came off a spare motor and was working just fine, so why can I not get the new cable to work?
This is all that is between me and the engine from starting!

Re: A 40 Plus Mk2, my next project
If I use a Villiers control lever the cable fits, sort of, as its now too long on the outer casing, the steel end nipple can be pulled out of the control casing.
One picture shows the cable fitted inside the control assembly, another shows how it can be pulled out about 3/8"
Any ideas please?

Re: A 40 Plus Mk2, my next project
I changed the lever for another make, fitted the old cable which is about an 1/8" longer on the inner wire, the throttle slide then worked.
I next fitted a new cable from SOS, i have two, both the same length.
I needed to remove the adjustment lock nut and screw the top cap right in, then I can get the slide to work but as soon as I fit the adjuster on to the tiller arm, the bending of the cable opens the throttle slide, that is the last picture
With the carb removed from the engine and the cable straight, I can open and close the slide in the normal manner.
I may try a shorter spring?
What if i use side cutters and take say a 1/4" off the length of the outer cover?
Any ideas please?

Re: A 40 Plus Mk2, my next project
Problem solved, I removed a cable and slide from another Seagull, then matched a new cable to that one.
What had happened was there are two new cables, plus a third which was too short, I had been trying to make that fit
The new cable was then fitted to the motor I am working on.
Works fine when fitted to the engine block now.
