Seized 102 power head

A 102 series power head that I was gifted was seized solid, I oiled it and left it on a shelf for a few years, I now find that with a suitable wrench that I can turn it over.

I becomes tighter as the piston comes to the top of its stroke, it also whistles !

With a spark plug fitted and lots of oil and 2 stroke inserted I can see via the exhaust port that there is blow bye on the compression stroke.

If I remove the piston, then free off the rings would that sort the tightness off and have the compression return.

The engine number is WHCH 144R8 this number does not show on the SOS web site on engine numbers, the R could possibly be a P, trying that has made no differnce, the number does not show up.

How do I unfreeze this motor, the piston moves but goes tight as the piston goes up and past the exhaust outlet.

WHC is102 plus with clutch. Ie lower gear bigger prop. Wipac magneto.

Do you have photo of engine number please.

Engine number is clearly WHCH 144R8

The power head is very clean, looks like its had an easy life, I wonder why it is part seized?


I think I did ask John from SOS to track the number?

Your correct about the Wipac set, the top cover is the black plastic version, I have no idea if that was the original?

The top was painted Gold which I assume to be correct?

What gear ratio would it have had?

What year would this model of 102 British Seagull have come out?

Re the gear ratio suitable for this motor? I have just checked the ratio of the 102 engine that I have recently rebuilt, it has an TC 82813 engine number.

The ratio is four turns of the motor to one turn of the propeller, would that be correct for the motor with the 102 series WHCH 144 R 8 engine number motor?

I have found a note that I wrote dated 07/04/2016 which gives engine number WHCH 144R8 as a 1968 motor which was and export and not on record.
it is a 102 series.

1967 - 73. Plus gearbox. 4 - 1.
Your TC had the wrong gearbox. The gearbox should be 2.5 -1. Had it been a THC it would be correct. This one is the the same as a THC but with a Wipac magneto.

The Wipac points Ignition was used on every model of Seagull from 1967.

Hugz, thanks on the info.

Is the pinion the same, just the number of teeth on the crown wheel is changed?

If so how many teeth will the correct crown wheel have?

I ask as I have a few spare ones here.

Not sure on the tooth count, but I would suggest the crown and pinion would come as a set and not be interchangeable with other ratio.

The gears need to mesh correctly. I can't imagine this would be possible if there was a mis-match.

BUT I may be wrong lol.

This 102 motor is still part seized, its quite free when the piston is down, then tightens up as the piston moves up and into the bore.

I have poured oil and 2 stroke into the crank case and also the upper piston area, the rings look clean.

Could the block be warped?

Bent crankshaft, cracked bore.

This restoration will require the use of a spanner.
Make it idiot proof and someone will make a better idiot.

Remove flywheel and magneto base and you will find the other 2 nut.

Pull the piston out and clean the bore, I would have done this first, so that I did not damage the bore more.
