Is it Just me?

Post by Keith.P »

Why is it, I cannot walk past a seagull without buying the bloody thing, It's not that I needed any more, or even have room for another one, and worst of all I paid good money for it.
There is bugger all on the site at the moment, so I'm making the most of it, captive audience and all that.
It went something like this.
Out and about today relic hunting, How do you think I found the wife, I spotted a lonely British Seagull.
OK lets see what it is, wipac ignition, not interested and I should have just walked away.
But I didn't walk away, fatal mistake.
Hang on, clench bolt at the front, Dover grip, no logo on the end of the tank, I'm now getting interested, bugger.
How much are you asking for your Seagull? "HOW MUCH", does it come with a yacht then, I still didn't walk away.
A little time later, after some umming and aahing we came to an agreement on price, I should have come to my senses and walked.
Still more than I wanted to pay for it, So I will keep that to myself, it will stop any embarrassment later.
And at the end of all this you would have thought it was something special, something uncommon, a little gem or even a diamond in the rough maybe.
No it was just rough.

Knowing that the wipac ignition that is fitted was later, so I changed that to a Villiers and put the Best for the cover that was on the wipac back on it.
Amazingly even though the wipac flywheel was lacking a little paint, inside was surprisingly good, not that I have any use for it, also the Bakelite Champion plug cap was a bonus.
Fuel system needs a clean and it will run.

And its a 1955-6 SJM.

I don't know when the stamped tanks came out, but I suspect somewhere around the mid 50's.
I will clean the carburettor and tank out and try to fire it up over the weekend, out skating today, Yes Charles, I know I'm too old.

From information that used to be on this site (and might still be), and which had come from BS, the serial numbers for the first 3 years of production of the SJMs & SJPs were as follows:-

1955 --- 10 to 586
1956 --- 587 to 3903
1957 --- 3904 to 9772

During these 3 years the LS was still being produced and possibly/probably the LM, although a grand total of only 20 off in 1957.

Those will help you Keith to determine the production year of your SJM, if indeed it is in one of the first 3 years production. I thought that as the plain end tank wasn't that rare, the change over might have been during or probably later than 1957.
It would be interesting to know the serial number of your. Keith.

@Keith.P I'm assuming that as a regular knowledgeable poster on here that you are fully aware that the "R" usually refers to a a later stamp added for factory Reconditioned.

Just posting the link for others less familiar with the engine serial number codes as if you try to look up SJMR0462 you won't get a successful decoding of the serial number.

Manufacture date of 1955-1956 according to the SOS identifier.

Yep, worked it out when I got it, but couldn't see the point of having a zero as the first number, seems a little pointless.
Also see my fair share of R's over the years.

I have been told, but haven't seen the evidence, that 'R' engines used their original serial number. If that is the case then SJMR 0426 was originally produced in 1955.

With regards to fuel tanks... In my data collection so far of SJM and SJP motors;

The last SJP I have recorded with a plain ended tank (at the present time) is SJP 34918, which according to the Identifier was manufactured sometime
around 1961/62.
The first SJP I have with the stamped tank is SJP894E3; May 1963.

The last SJM I have recorded with a plain ended tank (again, at present) is SJM 37648, with a manufacture date of ~1961/62, as per the Identifier.
I also have SJM58211, which has a fuel tank with the stamped sides, but no Seagull lettering; manufacture date of ~1962/63. Am in the process of finding the picture.

Cheers
