Most number 1 stamps I have looked at are clearly a 1 the last digit looks more like a letter

You are quite correct with that, Just tried it again and typing it with a 'i' into the identifier shows that it automatically changes to a 1.
Maybe one of the guys at the BS factory used the 'i' stamp instead of the '1' stamp.
Anything could have happened.
Charles helped make the identifier so he probably has a answer for you.

If you look close enough you can see letters underneath, filed back and re-stamped, or stamped but not by BS.

Very well spotted I see a few are about now I I am looking that bit closer since you pointed it out
