Airfilter Seagull Type WSPCL1284D1

Post by Defess »

Hi All

I wonder is here an air filter? Or should there be an air filter?
I got the thing with the choke assembly mounted on the carb, but I can't see any filter in it.

Hello and welcome to the forum!

Could you post a pic of the carburettor your motor currently has fitted?
The WSPC's had either an AMAL 416 carb or an AMAL twin-jet carb I believe.

I have attached pics of both types of carbies below.
Thanks to SOS for the exploded diagram

Cheers
BP

When these engines were built British air did require filtering. :) :)

Didn't the later forties have an air filter? The square box arrangement.

No Seagulls ever had an air filter, just covers to prevent them sucking in spray, though some of the later inboards (SD110 & SD160) had the carb inside a cast aluminium "box" to prevent fuel dripping from the carb onto the very hot exhaust header & starting a fire inside the motor cover.
Apparently this was caused, by it happening when a staff member was taking a party of school kids for a joy ride around Holes bay in the inboard demonstrator, don't know what all the fuss was about, as there doesn't seem to be a shortage of kids around here!

An air filter would have made a lot of sense as the UK is famous for it's dust storms over bodies of water!
Make it idiot proof and someone will make a better idiot.
