I used to believe rapid cooling was necessary with copper ~~~ but it is not. Just allow to cool . Steel must be slowly cooled as quenching it will harden it.and then chilling in cold water - maybe air cooling is OK. This is opposite to steel

Head Gaskets.
Thanks for the info on annealing, I always thought copper had to be quenched too. You live and learn!
I have a pile of old head gaskets her, not for sale, but saved for the day we cannot any longer get new ones.
As new ones are so cheap at the moment, I will always fit a new one if a head comes off, and yes I will now always smear a very thin layer of that orange stuff on both sides as well!
