Contact breaker case S4138 for Mk II ignition

Post by Donald A »

Can someone post a photo of this - and specs for possible construction? It would be nice to complete the job properly.

Second query is that I have 2 Mk II ignitions in my spares box - one is marked M II and the other is marked M III. They are clearly both Mk II WIPAC ignitions, although one is as new, but the other is older - does anyone know why Wipac marked them differently?

Wow - that worked - congratulations to the web administrator
They were taken with a rather elderly Nokia N95 phone camera

Nokia 95 pics

I use all the time!

Put an ignition together and wind a rope!

Enjoy it!

I think this is what your looking for in relation to putting your wipac ignition back toghether. There should be a gasket that fits between the ignition base plate and where the coil goes threw, If you dont have one you should get one because it will keep a lot of water out.

Part number S4138 is a transparent plastic case, some engines have it some do not with that ignition.
If you do not have it I would not worry too much, John will have them and they do come up on the bay.

I would run without, there are loads of engines that have no points cover, a lot of the american ones have exposed points under the flywheel.

Just run it, you can retro fit when you get one, put a wanted post up, someone may give you one.

The points cover were an optional extra & proved problematic in use, as they retained water & detritus around the contact breaker.

If I remember the comments accurately that Seagull's production manager made when I questioned him about them "dam fool idea don't bother with it as it makes adjusting the points hard work"!

I see I'm credited on Seagull Parts who are they?

Thanks guys - that makes a lot of sense, because my 1971 spares book (with a different drawing for Mk II ignition than the one in my 1980 spares book) shows it with "if fitted" against items 14 - 17 , which supports the optional extra point, and then the 1980 book has the items listed (but with no item numbers), with "discontinued" against the unnumbered items - which rather suggests, from Charles UK's comments, that seagull changed their minds about the case somewhere in the 70's, and it was no longer an optional extra!
I'll carry on without it
Any ideas on M II and M III ?!! M III is a lot better - but that may just be that it's less used There must have been a reason in Wipac's mind for the different marking.....
