Adjusting ignition timing
Recently bought a 1973 WS that had no spark. A kind gentleman explained to me that the WILPAK II ignition rarely fails. In this case he was correct. Removing the flywheel, coil & points I cleaned things to improve connections to ground & that restored the spark. However when I tried to start the motor it kicked back violently, a sign of ignition too far advanced. I'd read that British Seagulls do not have adjustable ignition advance. Also according to specifications the points should be set at .020". Then I realized that the opening of the points changes the timing of the spark. Increasing the opening retards the spark. Decreasing the opening advances the spark. Changed the point opening to .022" & cured the kick back.
