40+ running help please?
Hi there i have just bought a little 40+ and a pram dinghy for it, the engine has been stood about 4 years before i got her anyway seen her running and done the deal, tonight is the first night i have used her in the water and to begin with when just started her she went very well and sounded it then after 15 seconds she dies off and doesnt go very fast and makes no difference if you open the throttle right up or not... Any ideas?

Hi Tom
You've got a small problem which has been spoken about many times on the forum. There could be a few answers so if you have a look through the posts I'm sure you'll find many suggestions.
I would suggest if it's been sitting for 4 years it would be a good idea to give the carb a good clean. The fact it starts tells you the problem isn't major. If it was lying with old fuel in it, you'll have gunk residue like treacle left, a soak and clean with new petrol will clean this out. Again, this is one of a possible few things which might be wrong. The experienced guys here will tell you to clean first, then if needs be, check other things.
Good luck
Gerard

Hi Tom,
I would say it may be fuel starvation.
More information on model will help.
What is the number stamped on the crankcase.
Pictures will also help.

the engine is in my unit from memory its sjp19713l i think... When it starts it revs nicely and goes well then after few seconds dies off and plods along so to speak doesnt make much difference if you open the throttle up much more...

With the fuel cap vent open and the fuel tap open unscrew the float bowl on the carb, there should be a steady trickle of petrol.
If there is not a constant flow of petrol then you need to trace the problem back to the tank.
Also the petrol flow should stop if you lift the fuel needle lever.
If you have good petrol flow, then I would strip the carb and check that.

I checked today and cleaned the carb although she looked pretty good. I cleaned the tank aswell ect. I ran her again in the river tonight and was the same as yesterday a bit worse if anything else. The tap appears dry but the carb appears to be quite wet the outside of it. How do i post pictures? Are they any factory settings?

Screw 7 level with top of throttle valve piston (as a starting point. you can lean it off a bit by screwing it in a couple of turns. Do not run too lean .
More important make sure screw "A" is in the correct position, not in the small hole.
If the carb is wet on the outside, then you may find that it is flooding. Make sure the float and fuel needle valve are working as they should.
Is the engine pumping water? they can slow down when they get hot.

Re: 40+ running help please?
yes she pumps plenty of water as it feels luke warm. I will have to have a look at the screw later this afternoon. Is there a factory reset eg 2 turns out from closed on screw a or anything? Thanks for all the help.
