This might help.
If the square section drive tube is rusted to the pinion in the gear box, I would try some oil down the tube and some heat on the bottom of the tube.
I have also got them apart by holding the tube and bashing a 5/16" bar down the tube.

Wullie, a good soak in petrol/diesel is great for releasing stuff in these old engines. Good luck with you 40+

There's not many of us by what I've seen, but who knows, we might one day have enough guys to have a seagull day north of Portsmouth.
Keep us informed of your progress.

Is the Lake District about half way.
Charles with his little yellow rocket on Coniston, trying not to do a Campbell.
Might be a good venue?

As far as I am aware - no power boats are allowed on Coniston Water.
Windermere has speed restrictions in places but is incredibly busy in summer

Hey guys, it's called the lake district because there's a few stretches of water. That's a project I might take on in the Spring, I'm 2/12 - 3 hours from their.
