Help please!
How do I remove this drive pinion?
I have removed the thick washer and oil seal from the top.
I have removed the locating screw from the leg.
I have heated it up and I have bashed the pinion up the leg, which I am sure is the correct direction.
Nothing is moving.
The arrow in the pic is to a very small pin. Am I missing something with this? Is there something else to do to dismantle the box completely?
It has sat with water in the box and the gears are rusty. I don’t want to reassemble it without a proper clean.

Do you have a parts book?

If your answers yes, look at the parts drawing, the bit you've heated to red hot, is the stainless steel bevel pinion drive sleeve which is screwed on to the end of the bevel pinion, the last thing you really want to do is get the bevel pinion red hot it will destroy it's hardening & possibly melt the bronze bushes inside the pinion bearing sleeve.

The pin you ask about is a roll pin that is there to disrupt the oil that is spinning around with the pinion gear.

It's going to have to come apart now, to see if you've done any damage.

Sometimes a few sharp smacks on the casing around the pinion bushing with a hard mallet is enough to make driving out the pinion gear & bushing easier - though I haven't found that to be the norm for my motors.

I usually end up heating the ali casing enough so that with a few light taps (with a hammer & a long brass/bronze driving rod against the gear) the pinion gear & bushing easily slide out. Same (re: heating up the casing) to install.

If you have damaged the pinion bushing - a word of warning before purchasing a new one from Sheridan - make sure to ask that it's been reamed. I purchased one a while ago from them that had never been reamed.

I have managed to remove the unit and sleeve. I have no idea if it is reusable, but i expect i will need a new one.

I will try and remove the sleeve etc, so thank you for the exploded diagram.

Good work. What was the method?

Having removed the unit I feel I should strip it into its constituent parts.
However, I fear this may destroy it and, well, what’s the point.
I also feel it has probably been damaged in the process, so what is to lose?
Has anyone done this before? Any tips?

Why didn't you follow Naughty Bits methods of pinion assembly removal? with the sacrificial brass drift.

It looks from your pictures that you've destroyed the hardness of the bevel pinion gear, so you'll need a new one.

The bevel pinion sleeve with bushes looks B.E.R, so a new one of those.

If you look at the parts drawing you will see the bevel pinion drive sleeve is just screwed onto the end of the bevel pinion so unscrew that & it should fall apart.

It would be cheaper here in the UK to buy a complete good used lower unit than all the new parts required to rebuild your complete bevel pinion assembly sorry!
