Forty plus long shaft

Post by Gmart05 »

Hi all,
Bought a 40 + off eBay here in France . It was advertised as running and looked very tidy so took a punt at €60.
Once home I gave it a service following all the advice found on this forum ( new plug, ht lead, carb needle conversion, tank ,carb , fuel line, gear box oil , clean).

After some minor fettling , got it to run in a tank with a pencil thickness of cooling water at half throttle.
However, one thing bothers me slightly- everyone knows to quote the engine number when ordering spares from SOS . My engine is stamped FPL but I discovered the exhaust shaft length is 415 mm and not 558mm. The top and bottom of shaft show no evidence of being cut down so is it possible that the number was mis-stamped at the factory?
Can anyone shed any light on this?

Someone will have likely just swapped legs / exhaust/ waterpipe for a standard shaft … takes about 10 minutes!
