Doesn't start when warm

Hello, I am the proud owner of an 1950 seagull. It starts like a champ but only when it's cold. I have to let it cool down for 15 minutes to get it started again when it's warm. Could it be the coil?

I would change the condenser that is under the points box, I have had similar issues, and replacing the condenser cured it.

Also check the coil resistance should be about 4000 ohms.

I owned a motor bike which did the same, it was a yamaha srx600 and it only had a kick start. It started easy cold but when hot it would stop and wouldn't start until it cooled down, tried everything but in the end found it was a corroded contact from where the main wire from the magneto connected to the ignition, gave it a clean and the problem was solved

The wire from points to coil is almost gone, the flywheel is so stuck on that the hammer method doesn't work. Heating it doesn't does the job so I'm going to try a pulley puller.

If you use a puller tool there is a very good chance you will damage the flywheel, search the earlier posts!

Warm it up with a hot air gun, suspend by flywheel and use quite a big hammer, sharp hit don't tap it.
A spare nut is useful as you will damage it.



Give Tam a shout he has spare nuts, or even a flywheel.

After soaking in wd I've hang it to the sealing and gave it quite a few bangs. It came off with a grunge. The resistor is corroded and the coil very old. Where do I buy a replacement??

Test the coil, and replace the wire, don't over heat it when you solder the new wire on.

To test coil use a multimeter, measure resistance between HT pickup pad and wire that comes from the points box, should be about 4000 0hms.

There is a chance the coil is good, but if it is open circuit then replace.
