Saving Old Seagulls

Hello all,

Looking for some close-up pics of a complete skeletal bracket - particularly showing what the original bolts & transom screws were - so I can get my incomplete one finished as accurately as possible. Have done a search but hard to tell from the pics I've found so far.

The bolts on mine are steel & look a little thrown together from whatever was laying around in the shed. Are they supposed to be brass? Nuts either side?

The thumbscrews are stainless, missing the cups - are these likely to have been original? And if so - same pads as the Marston likely?

I'm also missing the bronze V-strut if anyone would like to sell or trade?

Here are some photos of mine for you to compare. My understanding is that bent thumbscrews were brass, and they are available from SOS. The pressure pads are made from steel, stainless I think. The marston ones are different as they have cast alloy pads and wing nuts. The replacement later thumbscrews are beautifully made, well worth the cost I think.

Looks like the bolts are steel, any idea of diameter & thread for the upper & lower mounting studs?

Yep, brass thumbscrews.

Note extra bolt across, above thumb screws. Strengthen bracket mod by BS?

Measured up the stainless (monel, maybe?) thumbscrews - 3/8" diameter, not the usual 7/16". Strange.

Given the ball ends - maybe an early run, a stepping stone between the Marston thumbscrews with pads & the brass L's..? Doesn't explain the smaller diameter, though (assuming all of the Marston thumbscrews also measured 7/16"..?)

Take one right out & clean all around the end of the thread to see if someone had repaired with a threaded insert or Helicoil.

Done - definitely no insert or heliocoil.

Check out the thread with a tiller arm nut, 3/8" BSF.

Are they not 3/8 UNC? when i drilled and tapped the chrome leg for my model 75 the thread was that, or am i misunderstanding?

There are no UNC or UNF threads on any of the range of British Seagull to the best of my knowledge!

Hey Charles, no it's not 3/8 BSF. I'll measure it up accurately & get back.

Charles, the tiller arm nut is 3/8 BSF, as you said - 20 TPI.

These thumbscrews are 3/8 BSW, 16 TPI.

Well spotted Hugz. I will have a look in the the workshop tomorrow and see what mine are like.
