Got my gull flying again. Keith P advised setting points to .015 instead of .020. Gull now re-feathered and soaring beautifully. Now onto barrel sailing.

In the spirit of the big ugly American where we usually think if some is good, then a lot is even better, is there a minimum to which points should be set?

If you reset the points to .020 and you get a spark, all is well in the world, but if you don't get a spark again, then I would say the coil is on its way out.
Also you have to remember that this motor has fixed timing, with a timing of something around 30-45 degrees before TDC.
So reducing the points gap is not going to make much difference to the running of the motor, but it will allow you to use a coil that could be slowly dying.
