So if not SAE 30, do you know a brand name of the 30 weight oil that I could look up please?Yes something very similar to SAE 30 but with less modern additives

All of them have the additives nowadays Pat, & are probably the better for it.

30 weight motor oil, SAE 30 modern equivalent.
Year of manufacture 1978 and after (25:1 petrol:oil mix)

It's more complicated than that Pat as you've not included the non synthetic TCW2 & 3, 2-stroke oils of which the water cooled versions are good for the 10:1 Seagulls & all the later ones!
These are very low stress outboards hence their longevity, a little TLC as they get towards pension age wouldn't hurt.
I like oil it's a lot cheaper & easier to buy than pistons & cylinders!

My thread seems to have gone off on a tangent here with this interesting info on oils. I simply thought that others out there might find my progression through my problems, and its outcome, could help them with similar faults. When I searched the threads to find an answer; I found many recurring questions similar to mine. Unfortunately, very few results were documented.
It would be very helpful if problems that are resolved were posted.
Is my problem resolved? Not really, because I don't know the reason, and that is annoying. The engine is running now, but I have lost a lot of boat time meanwhile. Yes, I could have gone out and bought another engine to save time, but I've put a lot of time into this one, and now I know every square millimetre of it, and I'm not giving up on it. If I ever identify the problem I will post it. Thanks to all for your valuable input.

Fuel or ignition are the 2 most likely culprits here.
Now that you have a special "bond" with your gull it should be easier the next time around anything goes wrong.
