Also when you say the engine just dies, does it misfire first, or just cut out, or does it just run out of power and just fade away?

Followed your suggestion Oyster and removed the four slotted head bolts allowing head to come off. That revealed that piston, cylinder wall, head gasket and cooling galleries all in order. Barely removed a teaspoon of oily grit from cooling jackets. Replaced head using same head gasket. Then looked at points and coil under flywheel not easy to determine point gap as opening in top of flywheel not in line with max gap opening, not allowing feeler gauge to be used, but after fiddling did see reasonable spark at plug and turned attention to carb needle setting all the while testing in barrel with and w/o propellor without determining results. Always ran fine without load and worse or not at all under load. Then looked at fuel tap and saw that some wrapping of teflon tape over cork seal had come off, perhaps partially blocking flow into carb bowl?
Fixed that and did last longer in barrel under load....so encouraged but not certain that was sole cause for "40 plus stops running". Thanks for all comments and suggestions

Yes, sounds as though the float bowl is not refilling quick enough to run the motor.

1. Will motor run ok if at idle speed?
2. When motor starts to cut and if you push tickler down on carb does fuel come out?

Maybe a bit of that teflon tape has become a soggly mess in the fuel line. Remove line (tube) and check and clean as well as the small gauze filter where the line goes into the carb. Same thing happened to me on a Pilot.
