Bronze cleaning

Post by seagull101 »

Hello everyone,

What is the best way to clean bronze transom bits as i tried the salt and vinegar solution and it turned a horrid pink color!?
I want it to be like the exhaust clamp on my SD.

Cheers Jacob

I dip in caustic soda for 24 hrs and then hit it with a wire brush on a drill.

Caustic Soda is NaOH Sodium Hydroxide or stuff you use to clean drains. White crystals that you dissolve in water.

Do be careful using caustic Soda though. It will destroy alluminium parts very quickly...

On alluminium I degrease, scrub in washing up liquid, then put in the dishwasher. Finish off with a rotary wire brush to burnish.

Also follow the instructions and add Soda to water and not the other way around.

To add to the above cautions re caustic soda, wear eye protection. One drop of the solution can do serious damage and cause blindness.

It is nasty on the skin too.

Get rid of it straight away, do not leave in unlabelled containers for others to find.

Good points made there Oyster!

UPDATE:

After leaving the bronze part in coke for 24hrs it had little or no effect, it is currently soaking in vinegar till tomorrow night.
The one that turned pink i have since wire brushed and is looking perfect!

I will get pics up when finished.
