Well now got my seagull back as a runner. Apparently it was the contact spring that had broken. However, on the journey home lying in the boot it obviously got upset (or knocked) and would only splutter for a few seconds the next day. Oh no here we go again. So tried a new plug but no success then decided to adjust the points. It was found that the very slightest adjustment (barely concieveable, difference between grip force on the feeler gauge) gave a range of successes. However, the attached video clip is the best that I have achieved currently. It seems to be hunting and will not settle on top speed. I have removed the prop spring whilst its in the tub. Any ideas what I should be trying? Many thanks Chris.

My opinion would be either, carb or crank leak, see if you have any sideways movement, if not go though the carb.

What carb is your seagull currently breathing through? Villiers or Bing?
Any pics?
Spark plug gap
Points gap
Fuel filters (probably 2 in your motor)
Fuel flow (check for any debris or sediment inside the fuel line)
Cleanliness of the fuel tank and fuel line etc.
Cleanliness of the carb internals
Crankcase air leak (the joint between the 2 halves of the crankcase)
Cylinder head leakage
Cylinder to crankcase sealing
all of these will affect how your engine is running.
Sounds like a fuel problem to me though.
On occasions i've found that if the carb has not got the compensator fitted (a bit like an air filter) it can sometimes upset the air flow into the engine giving the symptom of "hunting", maybe even apparent as not reaching high revs like yours seems to be.
Clean all of the fuel system and try again. It's probably something really simple.

Cheers, for the inputs and ideas. I'll start methodically working through these. In the meantime I've now got to do a headgasket change on my truck. Happy oily days ahead.
