How have you set the timing?

Do you know if the crankshaft has been replaced & has the motor ever run properly during your ownership?

Is it a forty model or a century 102 model?

With the tank furthest away from you, looking at the top of the motor, the ht outlet from baseplate should be at 8.00 o,clock for a forty model, or four o'clock for the century/102 models.

Sounds like your timing is out if it backfires, not sure why you are setting the points at T.D.C, set the points when they are fully open, just rotate the flywheel untill you see them open fully, then set with feeler gauge.
