Where should I start

Post by flyguy »

I bought my first Seagull today,
from the identify tool on here I see its a 40-
I am told it runs fine,
what should I do first?
should I have it serviced?
should I just stick it in a wheely bin and fire it up?
Only thing I know is that I should get a copy of the user manual and read it

Hi and welcome to the forum.

This is a good place to start on the main site FAQ'S

http://www.saving-old-seagulls.co.uk/faq2.html

Post a picture of your motor, that will help us a lot.

if it hasn't got a spark I guess this is the place to find out why and get it working

Untangle the throttle cable and check the carb slide goes up and down. Turnover motor to see if it has compression and there are no scraping noises. Unscrew gearbox plug and check for oil. Check for spark as mentioned. Always best to turn fuel tap off and run motor until dry after use. I note there is old fuel in fuel line. Maybe a potential problem if not run for a while.

Surprised you haven't had her running yet. Which country are you in?

Looks genuine and original to me.... you probably wont need much help with it. By the end of the year you will have a few more. Do you have a boat to put it on? Take the missus out with a bottle of Moet and a classy picnic so she associated seagulls with pleasure. Best to train them early, using the pavlov technique 8)

Even better idea you go to work tuesday give the missus the brasso and if she want,s the new handbag then it will be fully working and shinny when you come home,,,,,

Nice little motor. A quick once over and you should be ready to go.

Remove the plug and check for a spark, clean plug. If no spark first thing to check is points gap (Under flywheel cover)
turn over and ensure all is smooth.
Remove gearbox plug and check for oil, it should be a white/brown oil/water emulsion gloop that comes out. Refill with 140 grade and replace plug.
Clean out the petrol tank with fresh fuel and refill with correct mix.
check for various nuts and bolts being tight.
check throttle slide goes up and down smothly in carb when operating throttle.
Ensure throttle slide fully closes when closing throttle lever
lubricate throttle as required (Squirt of WD40)
Remove carb float bowl and wash out in fresh fuel.
Remove prop if testing in a tank
run up and check for water circulation.
Make lots of blue smoke!

Any problems talk to us!

Ok I have ordered the workshop manual and read most of the FAQs I may have missed it but I have a couple of questions
First, my Seagull is a 1965 model so 10/1 mix I assume, If I put in 10/1 and it has been converted what will happen, poor eyesight and a complete lack of what I am doing will stop me from trying to take the Carb apart
Next, how far up the shaft should the water level be when I try to start it or will that info be in the manual?
