Tank Reshaping By freezing

Post by THCL500J8 »

In the great seagull dropping adventure and prop murdering, the tank also got wounded.

The two metal strap mounts have caved in the back of the tank in two places, To about a third of the diameter of the tank.
I have managed to tap one out a bit with a hammer and piece of wood but don't want to cut the ends of and panel beat.

What if i filled the tank with water and sealed and froze the tank. Would this provide enough force to reshape the tank.
I would have to check it hourly i guess to stop it cracking the tank.

Is just a thought. Any other ideas most welcome.

I have tried the freezing method myself on a round tank from a 102. To close the tank cap I put a Quick Grip over the tank with a few pieces of Lexan in between. This was done under water, so as not to trap any air. It took half a week to freeze, and the rest of the week to push a few dents out. At that point I defrosted the whole thing, filled it up again, and put it back in the freezer to get rid of the other dents. Unfortunately it pushed the tank out of shape, it is now bigger in circumference than it was! I have created a bigger tank. The restoration project is paused because of other projects that are more pressing. And no, I have no pictures.

My conclusion: it works, but taking the end cap off gives better results. It probably is more suitable to dents that have no sharp crease.
